Chemical fire at Frisco pool supply business prompts brief shelter-in-place order

Residents in Frisco were told to shelter in place Wednesday morning due to a chemical fire at a pool supply business.
The three-alarm fire broke out around 7:45 a.m. in the 10500 block of John W. Elliott Drive, near Eldorado Parkway and Dallas North Tollway. Fire officials issued the shelter-in-place warning as a precaution after nearby residents complained of an odor, Kelly Kistner, the city’s fire marshal, told The Dallas Morning News.
Chemicals, including chlorine, pool salt and hypochlorite, which is used to shock pools, were stored at the business, Kistner said.
City officials said residents in the area bordered by Research Road to the north, Page Street to the south, the railroad tracks to the east and Dallas North Tollway to the west should shelter in place. The area includes several apartment and office buildings, Toyota Stadium and a trampoline park.

Officials lifted the order less than an hour later when crews determined the air was safe.
Photographs and videos posted on social media showed a thick plume of black smoke and flames, and some residents reported the smell of chlorine. Two firefighters were taken to the hospital for inhalation-related illnesses. Both were in stable condition, Kistner said.
The industrial complex east of the 10500 block John Elliott remained closed to traffic as of late Wednesday morning.
The cause of the fire is not known, Kistner said.
